Miles Franklin was born in 1879 in the Monaro region of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, a striking and beautiful area made famous in Banjo Paterson′s The Man From Snowy River. She was raised on the remote but very lovely Brindabella Station, where her father was a wealthy cattle owner. She spent much of her time at the main homestead, where she received her education, along with a host of her cousins. She also enjoyed visiting her grandmother Lampe at Talbingo, where she was indulged by her six aunts and uncles, as well as her grandmother. At Talbingo she could also escape her younger brothers and sisters and the responsibility they entailed.
