Attention all English teachers: Professional authors to visit schools

With the support of Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) has launched an exciting new program, Reading Australia BookPros (RA BookPros).

This program places professional authors in the classroom to conduct writing workshops and to introduce teachers to the resources of Reading Australia.

RA BookPros provides students with access to a professional author, experienced in running workshops. Workshops are aimed at developing thinking, literacy and writing skills of students and at boosting enthusiasm for writing.

ASA’s authors can help students plan their writing, dive into the action, build characters we care about, set pace, structure their writing and edit their writing. Authors can offer guidance on narrative writing, poetry, drama, illustration, graphic stories and more.

Workshops may be one-off or conducted over a series of weeks. They are available for all primary and secondary age groups. For teachers, the workshops are an opportunity for professional development through in-class modelling and the exchange of ideas.

As well as conducting writing workshops, authors will visit schools as proud ambassadors for Reading Australia, promoting the use of these resources to primary and secondary English teachers.

We encourage schools to take up this exciting opportunity to inspire students and celebrate Australian literature. For term 1, 2016, the first phase of this program will be rolled out in the Sydney metropolitan area and will expand to regional areas and other States and Territories later in the year. Please check the ASA website periodically for further updates.
